Dr. Austin Gallagher is a biologist and entrepreneur. He is the Chief Scientist and CEO of Beneath the Waves, a globally activated non-profit organization focusing on shark and ocean conservation.
Austin is an award-winning scientist and speaker, having spoken at TED, Summit, WeWork, MIT, Smithsonian, and in front of audiences at universities and businesses around the world. His work has received global media coverage from The New York Times, Forbes, Virgin, Yahoo, Cheddar, Vice, and Richard Branson. He has appeared on and hosted television shows on Discovery Channel’s Shark Week and National Geographic.
He is a Fulbright Scholar and Distinguished Chair in Environmental Science at Carleton University (Ottawa, ON, Canada) and is an Adjunct Professor at Northeastern University. He has published over 65 peer-reviewed papers in leading scientific journals and his research on sharks has led to exciting discoveries and real-world policy impact for threatened species. Austin serves on the Editorial Board of the scientific journal Endangered Species Research. In 2016 he was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 List in Science. He received his PhD from the University of Miami (2015), a Master’s from Northeastern University (2010), and a Bachelor’s in Biology from Loyola University in Maryland (2008).
His entrepreneurial pursuits have included the co-founding of Tempo, which produces health-focused functional beverages. Austin brings a science-based approach and brand-building experience to the business, whose products can be found online and in Whole Foods Market.
