Dr. Austin Gallagher is a biologist and entrepreneur. He is the Chief Scientist and CEO of Beneath the Waves, a non-profit organization focusing on shark and ocean conservation. His research is focused on the biology and conservation of predators, with a particular focus on sharks. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed papers in leading scientific journals and his research has led to exciting discoveries and real-world conservation outcomes.
Austin is also an award-winning speaker and presenter, having spoken at TED, Summit, WeWork, Mavericks, Smithsonian, and in front of audiences at universities, conferences, and corporations around the world. His work has received media attention from The New York Times, Forbes, Huffington Post, National Geographic, Vice, and Discovery Channel. In 2016 he was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 List in Science and he was the first ever American marine biologist to make the list.
He received his PhD from the University of Miami (2015), an MS from Northeastern University (2010), and a BS in Biology from Loyola University in Maryland (2008). He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Miami, serves as an Editor at the scientific journal Endangered Species Research, and is a member of the Forbes Non-Profit Council.
His entrepreneurial pursuits have included the co-founding of Tempo, a beverage startup producing health-focused functional beverages (sparkling teas) for the modern consumer. Austin brings a science-based approach to the business, which has been featured widely through online channels and on Wall Street.
