Dr. Austin Gallagher is an American biologist and entrepreneur. He is the Chief Scientist and CEO of Beneath the Waves, a globally activated non-profit organization focusing on shark and ocean conservation. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed papers in leading scientific journals and his pioneering research on sharks has led to exciting discoveries and real-world conservation and policy change for threatened species.
Austin is also an award-winning speaker, having spoken at TED, Summit, WeWork, MIT, Smithsonian, and in front of audiences at universities and businesses around the world. His work has received global media attention from The New York Times, Forbes, Virgin, Richard Branson, Yahoo, National Geographic, Cheddar, Vice, and on Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. In 2016 he was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 List in Science.
He received his PhD from the University of Miami (2015), a Master’s from Northeastern University (2010), and a Bachelor’s in Biology from Loyola University in Maryland (2008). He is an Adjunct Professor at Northeastern University, serves on the Editorial Board of the scientific journal Endangered Species Research, and is a member of the Forbes Non-Profit Council.
His entrepreneurial pursuits have included the co-founding of Aviary Brands, which manages several health-focused functional beverage companies. Austin brings a science-based approach and brand-building experience to the business, whose products can be found online and in Whole Foods Market.
